The Yale Computation and Society Initiative (CSI) is hosting a virtual speaker series called “Coffee Break” via Zoom and YouTube live streaming. In this on-going series of discussions, CSI will be inviting experts and leaders to share their perspectives on some of the key challenges facing society and whose solutions are likely to involve a novel synthesis of ideas and innovations from disciplines and schools including computer science, data science, social sciences, humanities, public health, business, and law. The faculty organizers for this series include Elisa Celis (Statistics and Data Science), Alan Gerber (Political Science, Statistics and Data Science, Economics, ISPS, and Dean of the Social Science Division), and Nisheeth Vishnoi (Computer Science). They hope that these Coffee Breaks will stimulate discussion, build connections, and foster collaborations across fields.
The series kicked off on April 7, 2020 with Professor Ed Kaplan (Yale SOM, Public Health, and Engineering), an expert on modeling and the spread and control of infectious disease. The second event was held on April 16 with Nicholas Christakis, Sterling Professor of Social and Natural Science, and of Internal Medicine & Biomedical Engineering (link here to view the recording of his event). Another talk is being planned on April 22 with K. VijayRaghavan, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India and Distinguished Professor and former Director of The National Centre for Biological Sciences.
CSI Coffee Breaks are intended to be widely accessible. Since these will be virtual, there is no limit on space and events are open to the public.
